Hockey season

Lincoln's hockey season is well underway. He had a small set back in December when he broke his collarbone, but he was back on the ice in just over 4 weeks and eager to get back out there. It's been non-stop since!

He is in his final year of Mites, and the association has a lot of exciting things for these 3rd graders to keep them excited and involved in hockey.

One of the highlights is when the 3rd graders get to be flag bearers at a Varsity hockey game. And bonus, Lincoln has been able to do it twice! He loves skating with those big boys, and man are they great to those little kiddos.

Regan's friend-TJ is extra sweet to Lincoln (TJ's little sister happens to be a classmate of Lincoln's). He always looks out for Lincoln who lights up when he sees him.

This month has also been filled with loads of practices and scrimmages. Sometimes doing twice/day! He's really come a long way in the last several years, working on his skating skills and stick handling. It's incredible to look back and remember he could barely stay upright just a few years ago.

He's made some good buddies and learned a lot not only about the sport and game, but also about teamwork and working together.
Sports are good for life-long lessons.

December 2022 recap

December came and went in the blink of an eye. As per usual, it's an incredibly busy month, consumed with shopping, gatherings and all things Christmas.
This year we had a few extra inches of snow, making for some beautiful morning walks. And despite the cold and snow and ice, I continued my mantra of "no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing" as I layered up for my daily morning walk in the amazing winter wonderland.

Ellie our Elf and her side kick Olaf returned, up to no good as usual. Lincoln was eager to wake every morning and search for her. Whether it was hiding in the tree, or somewhere in the fridge, he always got a good laugh out of her antics.

Lincoln's hockey team had a few events he sadly had to miss out on. The first was a real tournament. We made it out for the final game and he/Ryan got to join the team on ice for the obligatory final picture.

To help cheer him up about missing out on so many fun things, Lincoln and I had a date night with Subway and a local light event. He loved this place so much, we had to walk through a second time and take it all in. They even have a train with teddy bears, a ferris wheel and more!

Eventually as the month wore on, he started to use his arm more. I caught him helping wrap a present one day and couldn't help snap this picture. We had the kids exchange names for Christmas and he was so proud as he wrapped up a gift for his sister. He even made a crown for himself!

Christmas morning was a quick pivot due to a recent snowfall. Grandma Jan was too nervous to head on the roads alone, so we brought Christmas to her instead!

Grandma Jan made Ryan's dreams come true with an entire TOWER of grilling spices!

Lincoln's hockey association does a 3rd graders vs Varsity game/pizza. And it was the one thing he had been really looking forward to, even shed a couple of tears knowing he couldn't get on the ice to play. But we sat in the stands and watched the game, and then he was able to find his Varsity buddy TJ for pizza afterwards who was also nursing an injury. Lincoln actually is classmates with TJ's little sister. And TJ actually goes to school with Regan.
Small world.

Eventually we got back on the ice, and I couldn't help but chuckle when Lincoln took his first few steps on the ice and said "oh yea, I can do this". Turns out, he had thought he would forget how to skate completely! Good thing that's not really how it works.

New Years eve we got to spend with some dear friends who have recently moved back from to MN from Germany. Regan's boyfriend-Jack made this wonderful arrangement I had dreamed up. And it looked great! I'm bummed I forgot to take a picture until we started digging in.

We are so thrilled to have Paul and Renata closer so we can get together more often. We rang in all sorts of New Years, knowing not one of us would make it to midnight!
HALIFAX!

And this little guy might be the #1 reason we didn't make it to midnight.
But our girls want so badly for him to love them so they enjoy any moment they get to play with Max.

Regan was all smiles at the end of December, having Jack visit made her month completely!

A Christmas visit

Uncles Ben and Jon came for their annual Christmas visit in early December. It was a whirlwind weekend with a lot of softball, a little shopping, and missed hockey (thanks to a broken collarbone).
But we had a great time spending extended time together, shopping, eating, games and more shopping.
Lincoln decided against most shopping and opted instead for experiences, even with his bum arm. They had a lot of fun at Build-A-Bear and he dragged Ben into the VR experience at the MOA. Building some fun memories for sure.

Their visit happened to coincide with Lincoln's annual "art" event at school so they got to see Lincoln's self-portrait and hear a few music songs too. It was fun for them to be part of Lincoln's special day at school. And even more exciting as it was Lincoln's first art/music program because all of them previously have been cancelled due to the pandemic.
He did great and loved having a few extra audience members!

Thanks for a fun visit Uncles Ben and Jon!

Life Lately and Christmas prep

It's a little challenging to prep for Christmas with all the chasing kids around that we do each week. But we're squeaking in a little cookie baking, tree decorating, present wrapping and just days before Christmas, we finally added lights to the house (perhaps with a lot of begging on my part). You see, these kiddos of ours are in love with their activities and sports, tugging us in every direction 6 (sometimes 7) days/week. We put on at least 150 miles each week driving them to practices, games, lessons and training.  Sometimes I manage to run in/out of stores during their longer 3 hour trainings, or shop online from the comfort of my car during their shorter 1 hour trainings. I search Pinterest for the latest Elf happenings and set reminders on my phone to be sure the sneaky thing has moved when I finally crawl into the house at night, often after 10:30pm. I turned my car into a "carfice", in other words my car office.

And in between all of those sports and activities, we are sledding and crafting (more like science-kit building) and trying to find a good Hallmark show.

It doesn't quite feel like Christmas to me yet, maybe it's because I haven't had a chance to slow down. We have one more day of school/work this week, and then we'll take a breather and try to enjoy the season, because at this point, I kind of feel like Ellie our Elf!

February wrap up and into March

I'm a little behind, trying to catch up on February (just before March ends).
A bunch of random updates coming up:

We spent the month cautiously starting to venture out more, while still keeping our distance and staying safe. As we nearly approached the year mark of the pandemic, the girls were still in distance learning, but thankfully enjoying their softball winter training. Ryan and I were still working from home and Lincoln had thankfully gone back to school full-time.

Ben and Jon sent us this hilarious mask. We all took turns with it and the laughter was contagious! We needed this laugh!

Regan, Lincoln and I went tubing at Buck Hill. Regan laid in this position and said "if you close your eyes and let the sun hit your face, it almost feels like you're in Hawaii".
Almost kiddo.
Almost.

We busted out the Just Dance on the Wii and did some family dance offs. Regan is usually our winner but Lincoln and I are never far behind!

Regan hit her first, and second home runs during dome ball. Fans weren't allowed at the fist game but I was lucky enough to be there to see the second one :)
So excited for the summer!
Photobomb courtesy of her BFF-Syd.

We got to spend some extra time with our favorite 4 legged friend, Pepper while helping get her to a couple vet appointments.
These kids adore Angie's dog(s) and we love our sleepovers and playdates.

Thanks to vaccinations, Grandma Jan made a trek to visit one spring-like day. And lucky for us, she brought with her Regan's favorite: sauerkraut balls and ALL of our favorites: Happy Joe's taco pizza! YUM!
Thanks mom :)

We continued on with some house projects; this one a little more disruptive than we had planned. What started out as adding a couple of lights and changing out a light fixture turned into an all-day ordeal and a giant mess.
Needless to say, I had to move my home "office" for the day as the mess developed. They did a great job and we are so happy to have it done.

Sidney spends FAR too much time on screens, particularly Netflix. She's gotten into a show that is on regular TV and simply could not understand the single episode a week programming. She's so used to binge watching that it didn't make sense to wait 7 days between episodes!
But now, to watch her anticipation each week, it's so great to see her get excited for something!

We purchased all new furniture back in November, and still anxiously awaiting it's arrival.
However, we opted out of a new dining room table until Lincoln is a little older. Sadly, our chairs needed a facelift so I pulled up good old Pinterest and I got to work.
Happy to say they look great!

This girl wants a dog so so bad. She loves having a 4 legged friend to snuggle up with and keep her company.

That's a wrap as we end winter 20-21. Ready for spring!

Outdoor fun

We've been spending a LOT of time outside this winter: sledding, skating, you name it, we're doing it. And by "we", I mean ALL of us! I'm not one to love winter weather, but I'm embracing it because it's about the only way we can see other humans :) I'm even sporting a battery operated heated vest to keep me warm!

Lincoln is a pro going down the big hill near our home. He loves going off the jumps that the big kids have created!

Everyone (and their brother) has been frequenting the frozen Centennial Lakes for some skating. It's big enough to keep our distance although the ice can be a bit a bit rocky sometimes. Lincoln loves to dodge people (aka: cut them off!) while he and Ryan are playing tag, weaving in/out racing up and down the ice.

Regan convinced her softball teammates to trek down to the local sledding hill and join in some sledding and ice skating outdoor fun. Thankfully we didn't have to call Coach to report any significant injuries! Her bubble is incredibly small these days. And if she is spending 6 days/week with these girls, might as well get together outside for some fun!

My little dare devil wants so badly to be successful in snowboarding the hill. I wish he'd try a smaller bunny-hill to start out. He's doing quite well! Might have to take him to the ski hill next!

If we're going to continue spending all this time outside, I may have to also invest in battery-powered socks and gloves!

A day in the life (pandemic style)

Some day I will want to look back at these months to remember what it was like to be in the thick of it. To have so many balls in the air that it seems at any moment things will come crashing down.

I thought it would be interesting to do a quick run down of a typical day. So here we go:

I wake up early to start work before the rest of the house even wakes. My morning routine and commute are super fast since I thankfully work from home now. My friends joke that I watch Netflix in 10 minute increments while I get ready in the morning; sad but true.

Lincoln is up early shortly after me, chatting and loud as his usual routine. He is just so loud! He's up even earlier these days, excited to see what that sneaky elf did overnight.

By 8am, I’m fixing Lincoln breakfast while simultaneously calling in to the morning hospital admission meeting. Ryan starts his day and I depart for my morning walk or run depending on the day, calling Grandma Jan to keep me company for a couple of miles and catch up on the last 24 hours.  Sometimes I have a 1:1 with a staff member instead, but almost always, I take my morning call on a walk.

At 9am, Ryan or I help Lincoln get on his morning Google Meet with his class; often a bit of arguing happens before we convince him to sign in. He doesn't like school on a tablet :( Sometimes I tries to have a sit-in on the couch, refusing to log in. Eventually we get him online. While he listens to his teacher, we try to get some work done and pray no one screams in the background while I need to unmute to lead meetings. I’m often juggling Sidney crying for one reason or another (wifi goes out, link doesn’t work, she thinks only I can help her with homework), while jostling Regan to ensure she didn’t fall back to sleep after her first meet. Lincoln usually ignores our request to do any schoolwork with one of us sitting directly beside him; and in an effort for us to focus on work, he ends up doing whatever he wants.

Look closely, he asks to hold my hand while he works on the tablet. Annoying and adorable.

We spend the rest of the morning on work meetings, try to help Lincoln get assignments completed. Bear in mind, he is not able to navigate distance learning on his own. There are too many steps, too many tabs, too many distractions for him to be independent.

This is just a small sample of all the extra packets that were sent home for distance learning. Piles and piles of paper.

Somehow the dishwasher gets started and emptied, we tackle Lincoln's school work (with a lot of bribes), he plays outside with the neighbors dog, and eventually feed him lunch. Meanwhile, we get interrupted 4,000 times by the girls, who inevitably need help with school, technology not working, I read another 300 messages from any of the 3 schools and continually am told to add this or that to the grocery delivery list. I spend most of my entire workday on the phone with patients, families and team members, so this multi-tasking is incredibly challenging. I'm quick to hit the mute button when I'm not doing the talking.

Sid getting some extra help on a math assignment from Regan

Sadly I tend to keep working through lunch these days, a far cry from my usual routine where I used to spend lunch at the gym. Lunch continues with the constant interruptions; Regan just finished up Driver's Ed which was held during the noon hour  and she tended to have a lot of questions. By this time in the day, I'm checking in on my volunteer roles. I (stupidly) agreed to manage both Sidney's club softball team and Lincoln's hockey team. These roles require me to send updates to each team, collaborate with coaches, update calendars and answer questions from parents.

We spend the afternoon plugging away at Lincoln's assignments. Technology problems are constant when we're all trying to work on the same WiFi. Sidney usually sheds several rounds of tears between her coursework, tests or not understanding a lesson. We tag team various parts of the afternoon: Ryan has a call and I shush the kids, or vice versa. Try to get Lincoln outside to play, but he doesn't like to go alone and the rest of us are busy (except to play with the dog). Thankful for Quinn and they go back and forth between our yard and their yard wearing each other out.

Quinn begging for the rest of the family to come out and play too!

By late afternoon, Lincoln is doing whatever he wants: extra screen time, video games while facetiming friends, and talking non stop. He's often bouncing off the walls by this time of day. Girls are finishing homework and moving on to free time: Netflix, facetiming with friends and softball drills. No one wants to think about what to make for dinner and my mind is fried. I'd love to get outside but sadly run out of daylight. Plus there's an endless list of housework to get done, and I need to finish work and move into prepping Lincoln’s  schoolwork for the next day (he's enrolled in school so the teacher gives him assignments, but there's always work for me to prep).

In the evenings, we eat, clean up, play games (daily dose of Sorry!) and wind down. I'm generally completely exhausted. I feel flakey, inconsistent, tired easily, creatively blocked and suddenly don't seem to have as much driving force for future-based goals.  Recently I read a message from a professional psychologist/certified coach that put this pandemic time in perspective. The shortened version: "Your plans, creativity, energy, focus + motivation are on a Yo-Yo right now, because your brain believes you need to be extremely adaptive. You will not be on this rollercoaster forever. Be patient with your brain".

I usually unintentionally fall asleep on the couch, physically and mentally exhausted. We're grateful for our health, we're doing all we can to stay home and truly trying to make the most of it. It is not lost on me that this could be so much worse. We are grateful to have jobs and each other. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be sad and mourn the things we miss. And oddly enough, I know that when this is all over, I will likely miss all this together-time!
