Sidney...updates

Sweet Sidney. Our dear sweet Sidney. She really is something else. And if given the opportunity, has a wild and fun imagination. It's sad that she doesn't use it much like she used to (darn school takes up so much time), but it's still there each week, and she continues to make us laugh. Last night, it went like this:

Sidney grabbed 2 of Lincolns balls and took off into the toy room where she had the karaoke machine blaring and had been playing for some time. Then this happened....
Me-"what are you doing?"
Her-"getting boobies...(pause)... For my next show."

I admit, I almost peed my pants!

On to other news :) Sid got glasses and is cute as can be rocking out her new frames. She was worried sick that her friends would laugh, as it turns out, the only thing she heard was compliments and comments such as "I want glasses!" She looks great and we're hopeful for less headaches.
Love you sweet Sidney! Keep on being you.

visitng school

The girls' school has a policy where they don't have big birthday celebrations for each child. So each teacher has a unique way of celebrating each child, and in Regan's class, it meant I got to come to class for a little. The birthday child can invite a parent to read to the class and I was ecstatic to hear Ryan say he was not so super interested in reading to the class (he may have used a different remark....). And so Regan and I sat in special chairs at the front of the group and her friends listened intently as I read to them. I love going to class and interacting with their classmates.

While I haven't been in Sidney's classroom recently, I do get to see her artwork each day during pick up. This past week was all about 100 days of school and I love love love all that they do about 100. Sidney wrote out that she would really want 100: "dollrs" but that she would never want 100: "splntrs". Oh how I love kindergarten! And then here is a self-portrait of what she thinks she will look like at 100 years old. LOVE IT!

9th Birthday Party...bowling!

I can tell that Regan is growing up; for so many reasons. For starters, when she realized that her birthday was approaching, the decisions about her birthday party were already made. She announced instantly that she wanted a bowling party. Say what?! We don't bowl so I'm not sure where this idea stemmed from.

But nonetheless, she made her invitation list and a bowling party was to be had.
She was super excited to arrive at the bowling alley and see this pin and balloons setting on the table for decoration.

She had 6 of her good friends come out to have a good time on her big day. They all giggled about their "ugly shoes!" and I could sense many were nervous, having never been to a real bowling alley. It's intimidating and overwhelming all that crashing noise. Lincoln was in love with all of the balls, and when he saw the machine oiling the lanes, you would've thought he won the lottery by his screams!
All the girls warmed up to the chaos of the bowling alley quickly. And since the kids practice bowling in gym class at school and the computer does all the calculating (remember the days when we learned how to tally up bowling in our own head!?) they were left to simply have a good time
She's got quite the form, our little Regan!

In the end, they had so much fun! There were some gutter balls (even with the bumpers in place), a few spares and a bunch of strikes too!
I'm so thrilled that Regan included her little sister without skipping a beat. There wasn't an ounce of "you aren't bowling", or "you can't sit there" out of her mouth. These girls are so sweet and Sidney fit right into their conversations and giggles.

Regan picked out this cupcake birthday cake too, again without any offering of options from me. I'm a little sad but more excited for how she is growing up and the sweet girl that she is becoming.
She will tell you that she had an awesome birthday party and is so happy to be NINE!

Birthday girl

Our oldest is now close to double digits. Nine years ago we became parents. And holy Moses did our lives change. She entered this world over 3 weeks early and has hit the ground running. She talked early, walked early, heck she learned to read early. Her critical thinking skills are excellent (or a little annoying?!), and her desire to "get in on this adult conversation", is profound.
She trusts quickly and cries easily. I'm sure she will suffer a broken heart or two.
She's bored with any "toy", and always has been. Her preference remains with art, crafts, music or swimming.
And this year, we met her wish list by getting her an official swim bag, puzzles with more than 50 pieces, Barnes and Nobel gift card and a swim suit. Sidney came in strong with art supplies and Lincoln gave her something she was so excited to open: a book mark that doubles as a timer AND a book light. She was so happy!

And I just can't believe how big she is getting. She's towering in at 4' 7" and her feet are into size 5! She's eager to grow another size or two so as to fit into my shoes. She thinks that means she will be able to wear my heels!
We are so proud of all that you continue to accomplish Regan! We love you so very much :)

Nut, nuts and coconuts

Lesson number one: coconut is a nut. We have now learned the first lesson of many on this road of allergies. Who would've known that a coconut is truly a nut?, as regulated by the FDA. Obviously we also realized that Lincoln is not allergic to coconut, having been drinking coconut milk for a week. (Note: for whatever reason, he was tested only for walnuts (no allergy) and peanuts (high allergy)). But because his daycare is considered nut free, he cannot drink coconut milk at school. So we have move onto rice milk and so far so good!
Thankful he remains our happy boy through this.

Birthday eve

Someones birthday is sneaking up on us. Tonight, we put her to bed an 8 year old one last time. I had to walk back into her room and share one more 8 year old giggle before bed. Tell her how much I loved her one more time, and how tomorrow she'll be nine! She laughed and said "I want to be 13!".

No! Stop! Stay little forever! Our lives are busy and her schedule is jam packed. Between school and homework there's choir, art classes, ice skating lessons and swim team. Soon softball will start and I feel like we're drowning. She loves it all so it's hard to say no.

But nine!? When you say it like this it makes me cringe: in as many years as she's been ours, she'll be gone from our home. That's right. Only 9 more years til she graduates high school. But tonight I can't go there. Instead, we talked about her as a baby. The freezing cold day she was born. She loves those stories and we love to remind her. We love you dear Regan! We love you so much!

Allergies

Over the course of the last year, we have been questioning allergies for Lincoln. There were so many red flags that we sort of lost count. It all started with his persistent spitting up. We dismissed it mostly because the girls were also labeled "spitters" at this age. But as the months went on, there were patterns of increase spitting after I had eaten certain foods. And then there was the skin rashes after touching utensils with certain foods on them, the eczema, and more red flags. Late last fall, one particular doctor raised the same question of allergies, mentioning that Lincoln's medical history of ear infections and persistent colds (which just gave him more ear infections) could be signs of allergies. He gave us a "try this antibiotic and if it doesn't work, we'll test him for allergies". That particular antibiotic cleared up his 4 week cold and we thought we dodged a bullet. Until last week.
There was a tipping point and I felt myself frantically calling the pediatricians office for an allergy consult as his frozen breast milk supply was fading fast. We got in fairly quickly and the pediatrician felt, based on medical history, that he needed to at least do the blood work. He suggested since we were concerned about a milk allergy, we might as well test the other most common food allergies. Within 2 days, I had a message back from the doctor that Lincoln has not one, but three of the most common food allergies: cow's milk, peanut and egg.

I sort of felt my heart sink a little. In the grand scheme of life, this is not a big deal. And I know that. But like one friend said, any sort of detour on this road of life is hard to swallow. She felt my pain and sensed my worry. How was I going to make meals now? What about other dairy products? How do I work an Epi Pen? Do they make Benadryl for kids his age? Will I remember not to dip the knife from the peanut butter into the jelly? Will those that care for him take the same precautions? I just wanted to cry. My head still spins because we don't have answers to so many questions.

The doctor told me the testing that was done puts an allergy on a scale, and Lincoln's came back severe for both milk and peanut, and slightly less severe for egg. Considering he's eaten breads and other foods baked with egg, we are probably okay to continue. Apparently baking items changes the chemical make up. But for right now, we are eliminating eggs (as in scrambled or other), cow's milk (including most products made with it) and not introducing peanuts. In fact, those peanut products are staying far away from him.

We are blessed that the girls are old enough to understand. That Regan has several friends with allergies and she really gets it. She's already busy reading labels and ensuring that Lincoln remains safe. It's stressful that he is not old enough. That he will see a cookie or sandwich on a plate and grab for it without understanding he can't have it. And the results could be devastating.

I have reached out for help from folks with experience on this topic. And I intend to keep doing so until I learn all that I can. I'm thankful for working in healthcare, where experts are just down the hall: doctors, nurses and dietitians. For now, we have introduced coconut milk as his alternative. Ryan's thought is that we will have to take out a second mortgage for the cost of that stuff; holy moly :) And I know, that he's otherwise healthy. And we thank our lucky stars for this. In my field of work, I see the worst of the worst and I understand that in the big picture, this is really no big deal. That at the end of the day, we are able to help him with this and he will be just fine.

Homework

This third grade math is tough! Who would've thought?! At first it was just about clocks, then multiplication and division. We moved into fractions and I was still able to help. Suddenly we jumped into this, and I'm lost!
I was able to figure out the highlighted ones. After that, it's like I was talking Greek. Who knows how to do this stuff?!
But we're trying!

Winter fun

I snatched the girls away the other weekend for some fun. We went tubing, shared cookies and drank hot chocolate. I love that we can have some fun outdoors in this Minnesota winter.

We had so much fun being together and making memories. I love these two and the sisterly bond that they share.

Click here for a short video as we headed down the hill.

Silly busy boy

Lincoln is busy. Very very busy. But when he's active, I can't help but smile because it reminds me that at least he's healthy. (A third ear infection since January has made for a tough start of the year). He likes to toss things across the room, as seen in this clip  and make big messes all day long. Oh boy does it make Ryan mad!

We spend many hours each day outside. He likes to ride in his car, sled down the driveway and watch for busses. For hours on end, the boy could stay outside. We get cold far before he does. And often can only convince him to come in with a major distraction (food or dancing).

He plays hard....and then crashes hard
and when he's battling yet another ear infection, he sleeps with his mouth open because his sinuses are plugged

We love you sweet baby boy!

Variety Show 2015

Regan and her friends were eager to try out for this year's Variety Show at school. They practiced and sang their hearts out. With so many acts to choose from, we really were a little uncertain that they would make it past the try out round, Much to their delight, they made it to the actual show! I think our biggest surprise was these girls only practiced during their recess time. So it really is pretty amazing that they did so well. We are so proud of Regan and her friends; she truly has a great group of girls around her.
Way to go Regan! We are so proud of you!
You can click HERE to watch to their rendition of "snowman showman".
pardon the shaky video....I had Lincoln trying to stand on my legs to see over the man in front of us.

Report Cards

With two in elementary school, report card day is a pretty big deal. Last week was report card day. Sidney is oblivious to this concept, not really understanding that she is being assessed regularly on her reading, writing and math. Not to mention, this girl has an internal fire that is something to clone. Those two facts coupled together means she tries her hardest each and every day, independently knowing what homework is due and getting it done. Over and over again we hear "we have to do my psalms"....side note: they don't attend a Catholic school. She pronounces "poems" as "psalms" and it's ever so cute. Each day she goes into her back pack and grabs her handwriting worksheet, finishes it, and replaces it in her back pack. Most days this takes no reminding at all. This girl will go far in life if she keeps this up! So it really was no surprise when she came home with excellent marks on her report card. She got great reviews in every area, and even above expectations in several areas. We are very proud of our middle!

As for Regan, she agonized over report card day. Knowing that it meant we were getting her assessment from the last few months of work, she worried that she might not have tried hard enough, that her effort in gym was lagging behind and that her socialization was a bit much. But in the end, she too got great marks on her report card. Even in gym class which historically has been an area of struggle for her. Yes she talks too much in class...but this hasn't changed since Kindergarten so we are never surprised. She's chatty and social and I'll take it as a good thing. Now if she could figure out when to socialize, we'd all be in good shape :) Her class happens to be home based to two special needs kids, and one of them is a sweet girl with Down Syndrome. Regan enjoys her company as much as K enjoys Regan's. And so when K invited Regan back to the special needs classroom for "free time" last week, Regan was quick to go along with her. So when we see comments that Regan is chatty in class, I'm just proud to know she is chatting with everyone. Regan could work a little more on her effort with homework, and on staying organized (rainbow sorting her crayons no longer constitutes as staying organized as it once did in Kindergarten), but in the end, she too is above expectation in several areas. Nice job Regan!

We're working hard on independence and learning as much as possible during these early years of school. We know that harder sujects are to come as the girls climb in grades; so having good report cards now means they have an awesome foundation of education. We are thankful everyday for their amazing teachers and couldn't be more proud of these two!
Way to go girls, we love you!
